WVU fans rattled by Bob Huggins’ on-court health scare

During WVU’s home matchup with Texas Monday night, legendary coach Bob Huggins experienced an on-court health scare and collapsed to his knees while grasping his chest during a timeout with under 30 seconds remaining in the first half.

The WVU Coliseum instantly went silent as fans in attendance held their breath, unsure of what was happening. Moments later, Huggins arose back to his feet with the help of his players and assistant coaches, made his way over to the sideline, took a seat on his signature stool and gave the okay signal. He was ready to continue coaching.

Fans instantly filled Twitter with worry and prayers for their beloved coach, who recently clinched career win number 800 in his 35th year as a head coach. 10 of those have been spent at WVU.

According to Huggins, his defibrillator gave him a brief shock and he experienced light-headedness due to the medications he takes for his heart. During halftime, his personal doctor checked him out and cleared him to continue coaching.

So that’s exactly what he did.

The Mountaineers went on to defeat the Longhorns 77-62 behind a career-best performance from r-freshman Lamont West (23 points, 6-of-8 from three) and a double-double from junior Jevon Carter (24 points, 10 rebounds).

After last night, no one should ever doubt Huggins’ dedication and love for the game of basketball – especially West Virginia basketball.
